A bag says it contains 30% protein, so it must be higher-protein than the canned food showing 10%, right? Not necessarily. The dog food label guaranteed analysis is useful, but it is also one of the most commonly misread parts of the package. It reports nutrients in the food as sold, with its existing water content, and it tells you far less than the front label may imply.

For a practical buying decision, treat guaranteed analysis as a starting screen, not a nutritional verdict. It can help you compare protein, fat, fiber, and moisture. It cannot tell you whether the protein is highly digestible, whether the formula is appropriate for your dog’s life stage, or whether the food provides enough nutrition for the calories your dog actually eats.

What a Dog Food Label Guaranteed Analysis Actually Shows

Under US pet food labeling rules, a typical guaranteed analysis must state minimum crude protein and crude fat, plus maximum crude fiber and moisture. Labels may also guarantee other nutrients, such as calcium, phosphorus, taurine, omega-3 fatty acids, or glucosamine, but those additions vary by product.

The words minimum and maximum matter. A food guaranteed to contain at least 26% crude protein may contain more than 26%. A food with a maximum of 4% crude fiber may contain less. These are legal guarantees, not exact laboratory results for every batch.

“Crude” does not mean poor quality or that the ingredient is unrefined. It is laboratory terminology. Crude protein is estimated from nitrogen content, while crude fat is measured through an extraction method. Neither test identifies protein source, amino acid balance, fat quality, digestibility, or biological value.

That creates a hard limit: two foods can post the same protein guarantee while producing very different results in the bowl and in your dog’s stool. One may use highly digestible animal-based ingredients and provide a strong amino acid profile. Another may meet a similar number with more plant protein or ingredients that are less digestible for a particular dog. The label percentage alone cannot settle that question.

Why Moisture Makes Label Percentages Misleading

Most kibble contains roughly 8% to 12% moisture. Canned foods often contain 75% to 82%. Water adds weight but not protein, fat, or calories, so comparing protein percentages directly across these formats is misleading.

To make a fair comparison, convert nutrients to a dry matter basis. Use this calculation:

Dry matter nutrient percentage = as-fed nutrient percentage ÷ (100 – moisture percentage) × 100

Consider a dry food with 26% protein and 10% moisture. Its protein content on a dry matter basis is 28.9%:

26 ÷ 90 × 100 = 28.9%

Now consider canned food with 9% protein and 78% moisture. Its dry matter protein is 40.9%:

9 ÷ 22 × 100 = 40.9%

The canned food looked much lower in protein on the package. Once water is removed from the comparison, it is substantially higher. This is why a dry matter calculation is essential when comparing kibble with canned, fresh, frozen, or refrigerated foods.

For two dry kibbles with similar moisture levels, the as-fed numbers are usually close enough for an initial comparison. For different food formats, skipping the conversion can lead to the wrong conclusion.

Dry Matter Is Better, but It Is Not the Final Answer

Dry matter comparisons put foods on the same moisture-free basis. That is valuable, particularly when assessing protein, fat, fiber, calcium, and phosphorus. But dogs eat calories, not dry matter.

A high-fat food can deliver more calories per cup than a lower-fat food. If your dog needs a small portion of that calorie-dense formula, the total grams of protein consumed each day may not be higher than with another food. This matters for dogs prone to weight gain, dogs with low activity levels, and owners trying to control the real cost per bowl.

When available, compare grams of protein per 1,000 kilocalories. That calculation is more meaningful for assessing protein intake relative to energy consumed. It requires more label data and math, but it avoids treating a percentage as the whole story.

What the Guaranteed Analysis Cannot Tell You

The guaranteed analysis is not a report card for overall food quality. It leaves out several factors that deserve attention before a purchase.

First, it does not show digestibility. A food can test high in a nutrient yet provide less usable nutrition if that nutrient is poorly digested. Digestibility is influenced by ingredient selection, processing, fiber level, formulation, and the individual dog. A brand’s feeding trial data, stool quality, and a dog’s sustained body condition are often more informative than a protein claim alone.

Second, it does not show amino acid adequacy. Dogs require specific amino acids, not just a high total protein percentage. A formula labeled complete and balanced for the appropriate life stage is a more meaningful baseline than chasing the highest protein number on the shelf.

Third, it does not reveal ingredient amounts. Ingredients are listed by weight before processing, which means moisture can affect their position in the list. The ingredient panel can provide context, but it cannot tell you the exact contribution of each ingredient or the final digestibility of the recipe.

Fourth, it does not establish safety for every dog. A high-fat formula may be unsuitable for a dog that needs fat restriction. A food with more fiber may help one dog feel full or improve stool consistency but may not suit another with a sensitive digestive tract. Dogs with diagnosed kidney disease, pancreatitis, urinary conditions, or food-responsive gastrointestinal disease need individualized veterinary guidance rather than broad label comparisons.

How to Use the Numbers Without Falling for Marketing

Start by confirming that the food carries an AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement for your dog’s life stage. “Complete and balanced” for adult maintenance is not the same as a formula suitable for growth, including large-size puppies, or for all life stages. This statement is more foundational than a front-of-bag claim such as “high protein,” “ancestral,” or “premium.”

Then read the guaranteed analysis in context. Compare foods on a dry matter basis when moisture differs substantially. Check fat as carefully as protein, especially if weight management or digestive tolerance is a concern. Look at fiber without assuming lower is always better. Fiber can support stool quality and satiety, but excessive or poorly tolerated fiber may increase stool volume or reduce energy density.

Next, find the calorie statement, usually expressed as kilocalories per kilogram and often per cup, can, or tray. Feeding directions are only a starting estimate, so monitor your dog’s body weight, body condition, appetite, stool quality, coat, and energy over time. A food can look excellent on paper and still be a poor fit if it causes chronic loose stool, unwanted weight change, or refusal to eat.

Finally, calculate cost by daily feeding amount, not bag price. A less expensive food that requires more cups per day may not be cheaper. Conversely, a calorie-dense food can seem expensive per bag while costing less per day. Nutritional value is not the same as the price tag, and neither is guaranteed analysis.

A Better Label-Reading Sequence

Use this order when comparing foods at the store or online:

  1. Check the AAFCO life-stage statement.
  2. Confirm the calorie density and estimate the daily amount your dog would need.
  3. Convert guaranteed analysis values to dry matter when comparing different formats.
  4. Consider protein and fat alongside your dog’s age, activity, body condition, and medical needs.
  5. Review the ingredient list and manufacturer transparency for context, not as a shortcut to judging quality.
  6. Track your individual dog’s response after a gradual food transition.

This approach is slower than picking the largest protein number or the most persuasive package claim. It is also far more likely to protect your dog from a mismatch between marketing and nutritional reality.

The most useful label question is not, “Which food has the highest percentage?” Ask instead: “Does this formula provide appropriate nutrition, at an appropriate calorie level, that my dog can digest, enjoy, and maintain a healthy body condition on?” The guaranteed analysis helps answer one part of that question. Your dog, and the evidence beyond the label, answer the rest.
