Dry Matter Basis Dog Food, Explained Clearly

A canned food can look low in protein next to kibble, even when it supplies more protein after water is removed. That is why a dry matter basis dog food comparison is one of the few label calculations that genuinely helps consumers see beyond packaging claims. It does not tell you whether a food is good. It tells you whether you are comparing nutrients fairly.

Pet food labels report nutrients as the product sits in the bag or can. This is called the as-fed basis. A kibble that is 10% moisture and a canned food that is 78% moisture are mostly different amounts of water. Comparing their printed protein percentages without adjusting for that water is not a nutrition analysis. It is comparing concentration to dilution.

What Dry Matter Basis Means

Dry matter is everything in a food except water: protein, fat, carbohydrate, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other solids. Dry matter basis, often shortened to DMB, expresses a nutrient as a percentage of those solids alone.

Think of it as removing water from the equation. If two foods were dehydrated, DMB is the measure that lets you compare how much protein, fat, or fiber would remain in each.

This matters most when comparing formats. Dry kibble commonly contains about 8% to 12% moisture. Canned food often contains 70% to 85%. Fresh, refrigerated, and frozen foods vary widely. A food with 9% protein may sound modest until you learn it is 78% water. Once converted to dry matter, it may have a higher protein concentration than a kibble labeled 26% protein.

Dry matter calculations are also useful within one format when moisture differs meaningfully. Two canned foods may each list 10% protein, but the formula with less water is more protein-dense on a dry matter basis.

How to Calculate Dry Matter Basis for Dog Food

You only need the guaranteed analysis and the moisture percentage shown on the label. Use this formula:

Nutrient on a dry matter basis = (as-fed nutrient percentage ÷ 100 – moisture percentage) × 100

For a dry food with 26% crude protein and 10% moisture:

26 ÷ (100 – 10) × 100 = 28.9% protein DMB

For a canned food with 9% crude protein and 78% moisture:

9 ÷ (100 – 78) × 100 = 40.9% protein DMB

The canned food is not necessarily the better choice. It may be more expensive, contain more fat than your dog needs, or provide fewer calories per dollar. But the calculation establishes that its protein concentration is higher once water is removed.

The same formula works for fat, crude fiber, and minerals when values are available. If a formula lists 15% crude fat and 10% moisture, its fat is 16.7% on a dry matter basis. If another lists 7% fat and 78% moisture, its DMB fat is 31.8%. The second food is substantially fattier than the label first suggests.

When using a calculator, keep the percentages as whole numbers. Enter 78, not 0.78, for 78% moisture. The most common error is subtracting the moisture as a decimal from 100, which produces a meaningless result.

What the Guaranteed Analysis Can and Cannot Tell You

A dry matter calculation improves label comparisons, but it cannot fix the limitations of the underlying label. In the United States, a guaranteed analysis usually lists crude protein as a minimum and crude fat as a minimum. Fiber and moisture are typically maximums. Those are legal guarantees, not necessarily laboratory-tested averages for the batch in your kitchen.

That distinction matters. A food guaranteed at a minimum of 26% protein could contain more than 26%. A food with a maximum of 10% moisture could contain less. Your DMB result is therefore an informed estimate based on the label, not a precise nutrient assay.

The word crude also deserves context. Crude protein measures nitrogen, then estimates protein content from it. It does not reveal amino acid quality, digestibility, or how much of the protein your dog can use. Two foods with identical protein DMB values can perform differently because of ingredient sourcing, processing, amino acid balance, and digestibility.

Likewise, crude fiber is not total dietary fiber. It misses some soluble and fermentable fibers that can matter for stool quality and the gut microbiome. A low crude fiber number does not automatically mean a food is low in all fiber, and a high number is not automatically a problem.

Use DMB to Answer the Right Question

Dry matter basis is especially useful for a few practical decisions. It can help you compare protein concentration between a wet food and kibble, identify unexpectedly high-fat formulas for a dog prone to pancreatitis, or compare fiber levels when discussing stool concerns with a veterinarian.

It is less useful for determining portion size. Dogs eat calories, not percentages. A canned food may have a higher protein DMB than kibble but provide far fewer calories per ounce because it contains so much water. That can be helpful for a dog that needs more meal volume while losing weight. It can be inconvenient for a large, active dog whose owner needs to feed several cans each day.

For portions, start with calories per cup, can, tray, or ounce and adjust based on body condition, activity, age, medical history, and veterinary guidance. For cost, calculate cost per 1,000 calories rather than cost per bag or can. For protein and fat concentration, use DMB. Different questions require different metrics.

This is where label marketing often gets ahead of evidence. A package may emphasize “high protein” without telling you whether the claim is based on as-fed content, dry matter content, or a comparison to another product. A front-of-bag claim is not a substitute for doing the math.

DMB Does Not Set Your Dog’s Requirement

Owners sometimes calculate a food’s protein DMB and then search for a universal ideal number. Nutrition is not that simple. A healthy adult dog, a growing puppy, a senior dog maintaining lean mass, and a dog with kidney disease may need very different feeding strategies.

AAFCO nutrient profiles set minimums for complete and balanced foods at defined life stages, but they are not personalized diet prescriptions. They also include more than protein and fat. Calcium, phosphorus, essential fatty acids, amino acids, and trace minerals matter, particularly for growing dogs and dogs with health conditions.

A high DMB protein number is not automatically superior. Very high protein can be appropriate in some calorie-controlled diets because it may support lean mass and satiety. But a formula should still provide appropriate calories, fat, minerals, and amino acid balance. It must also be something your dog tolerates and willingly eats.

For dogs with diagnosed disease, do not use a DMB calculation to replace clinical guidance. A prescription diet may appear lower in a nutrient than a retail food for a deliberate medical reason. Ask your veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary nutritionist how to interpret the full diet, not one headline percentage.

A More Complete Label Comparison

When comparing two foods, calculate DMB protein and fat first. Then look at calories, the nutritional adequacy statement, ingredient transparency, recall history, feeding trial evidence where available, and the real daily cost. If your dog has itchy skin, vomiting, loose stool, or recurrent ear problems, the relevant question may be protein source or a properly conducted elimination diet, not which label has the bigger protein number.

Ingredient lists also need context. They are ordered by weight before processing, so water-heavy ingredients can appear high on the list. Dry matter analysis corrects a nutrient percentage, but it does not turn an ingredient list into a digestibility study. A food’s formulation, quality-control practices, and feeding response remain part of the evidence.

The practical goal is not to turn every purchase into a spreadsheet. It is to avoid the obvious comparison error: treating water as nutrition. When a label makes a dramatic claim, remove the moisture, compare the calories and nutrient concentrations, and let your dog’s health and body condition have the final say.
